Meningitis ACWY Vaccination ( posted on Aug 27, 2015 )

Were you born between 1st September 1996 and 31st August 1997?

If so a new vaccination is available to protect against meningitis (inflammation of the brain) and septicaemia (blood poisoning) caused by meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y.

It is very important that you take up the vaccine. It is being offered in response to a rapidly growing increase in cases of a highly aggressive strain of meningococcal disease group W. This disease can cause meningitis and septicaemia that can kill in hours and those who recover may be left severely disabled. The vaccine also protects against three other meningococcal groups too – A, C and Y.

Are you going to university?

If you’re planning to go to university you are also eligible for the vaccination up to the age of 25 years old, please make an appointment as soon as possible before leaving for university. You are at more risk of meningitis and septicaemia in the first weeks at university when you mix with lots of new people, some of whom may unknowingly carry the meningococcal bacteria, which is usually spread through prolonged close contact.

These are national campaigns developed by the Department of Health.

Please contact the surgery to book for your vaccination

Travel Vaccinations ( posted on May 24, 2012 )

It's that time of year again where we start to think of our holidays, don't forget that for some destinations travel vaccinations are required and these can be completed, in most cases, here at the surgery. Complete our online form or collect one from reception, and then contact the surgery four working days after submission.  Our Practice Nurse will have your individual recommendations relating to where you are travelling and your previous vaccinations. We want your holidays to be enjoyable and not potentially harmful so please complete the form in full. Some vaccinations require time to develop immunity so please complete the form as soon as possible to allow us to vaccinate in plenty of time for your trip.

Happy Holidays

Non Attendance for Appointments ( posted on Apr 7, 2011 )

We are continually monitoring the amount of time wasted by patients not attending for their appointments, and statistics are shown in the practice.

In the 2009-10 year we had 20 hours of doctors appointments and 80 hours of nurse appointments not attended. In the 2010-11 year there was a slight improvement, doctors appointments missed dropped to 16 hours twenty five minutes and nurse appointments to 66 hours.

We wanted to thank all our patients for helping to reduce this total and notify you of the many ways you can cancel an appointment at the practice to continue the improvement.

To cancel an appointment you can

  • Ring the practice and speak to reception
  • Ring the practice and use the 24 hour cancellation line
  • Use the online form available on the website 24 hours a day
  • Email the practice - donccg.barnburghsurgery@nhs.net
  • Inform the receptionists in the practice
